![]() ![]() The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, when combined with the HITECH provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, gives states the tools they need to modernize the health care system. ![]() States have an urgent need to modernize the medical care system to improve the quality of care while simultaneously lowering its cost.įortunately, state governments are in a good position to do so. This high level of medical spending, combined with the increased need for services and reduced revenues driven by an economic recession, creates enormous financial difficulties for states, as their experience with budget shortfalls over the past few years illustrates. State and local governments currently spend about $300 billion annually on health care, and health care accounts for nearly one-third of state budgets. ![]()
